Happy New Year! May 2024 be healthy and happy for your and your loved ones!



Though I am writing this post a bit late on January 3rd, 2024, it's not too late at all to say Happy New Year to your Russian friends and colleagues and even celebrate 2024!

  • December 31- January 1 - New Year Celebration

  • January 7th - Orthodox Christmas ( for those who celebrate; keep in mind that starting 2023, Ukraine celebrates Christmas on December 25th. Read BBC article)

  • January 13th - Old New Year




Both New Year and Old New Year are not religious holidays and are great occasions to get together with your family and friends.

A few traditional dishes you can make for Old New Year Party on January 13th, 2024:


While there are some traditional cakes Russians like to make, it is customary to bake/make any dessert you want. Usually, New Year's menu includes traditional dishes like Olivie, pickles, pies, salads and any other dishes you want to serve. It is customary to prepare something new or a dish that will impress your guests. Catering is now a popular option for any stress and cooking -free celebrations.


Like in the US, the New Year night is not complete without an official address and a concert. Below is an alternative to the Russian state program that you can view and listen to on January 13th, You will hear New Year greetings, wishes and messages of hope from Russian actors, musicians, TV personalities and writers who are against the war.
